Castletown as a place for people!

The document of Castletown public spaces is there to bring up discussions about life in this small town. It was created in collaboration with Castletown Commissioners. What can its streets and corners turn into with a bit of activation?

We tried to find a network of public spaces to function as navigation spots along the connection routes in town. Then I made a quick sketch of each to bring up a discussion about the places around us.

All the sketches in the document are not to be taken literally but disintegrated into elements. For example:

What do I like about this image? Is it the seating? Is it the feeling of safety in the street? Is it the activity, the people enjoying the place? Would I be less worried to send kids to school or shop walking on their own if the street looked like this? And why is that? Do I like there is more art in the street?

Or on the other hand? What is bothering you about the image? Do I feel like seagulls would attack me sitting there eating my lunch? Do I think art in public space is just a waste of money? What would I do with the resources?

At the end of June 2022, we used the illustrations to create an interactive installation in Castletown Town Hall. The theme was Summer Activities in Castletown. There were posters with questions, a map where people could mark their favourite places and a table with colouring sheets of the 6 selected illustrations.
